Scientist

1.   Purpose

The Scientist position in the Department of Global Health will be responsible for overseeing a multi-site research project investigating alternative diagnostics for tuberculosis disease. Primary duties of this position include managing and mentoring laboratory technicians, experimental design, statistical analysis, and communicating research progress to high-level collaborators, stakeholders, and clients. The position requires thorough understanding of molecular biology and molecular assay development. Candidates must possess the ability to troubleshoot and optimize experimental processes, maintain collaborations with academic and industry partners, and author manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.

2.   Qualifications

To qualify as a Scientist, the candidate must have earned:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, or a degree in science or health related field (e.g., chemistry or microbiology, and 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience OR

  • Master’s or PhD in an appropriate field with previous research experience.

3.   Responsibilities

The Scientist reports to his or her departmental Director, Associate Director, or Senior Scientist. Responsibilities of the Scientist include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Independently plan and conduct laboratory experiments.

  • Adhere to all safety requirements in the laboratory (e.g., PPE, use of safety hoods, proper biohazardous waste disposal).

  • Handle hazardous materials, reagents, and chemicals in accordance with laboratory policy and procedure.

  • Interpret laboratory data and write research reports.

  • Provide updates to the departmental Director regarding project status and progress.

  • Provide assistance to other projects when/if asked.

  • Perform complex method development, validation, and troubleshooting.

  • Participate in process improvement and quality assurance initiatives.

  • Conduct and receive cross-training in laboratory SOPs and techniques, as required.

  • Generate SOPs and protocols.

  • Write and/or generate testing reports, scientific articles, and results dissemination documentation, as necessary.

4.   Competencies

  • Consistently demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in MS software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Willing to work directly with all types of samples, including human blood, urine, feces, and saliva.

  • Willing to work with infectious bacterial and viral pathogens following biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) practices.

5.   Work Environment

  • Work safely in laboratory up to Biosafety Level 2 (or, where required, BSL-3).

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as ensure that other lab members follow this same practice.

6.   Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand or sit for long periods of time.

  • Able to execute repetitive hand motion, including those required for pipetting, typing on a keyboard, etc.

  • Able to focus on computer screens and small objects.
